Dr. Mark Hammonds to Present Skin Cancer Prevention Seminar

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and a great time to get educated about skin cancer prevention and screening. Some facts about skin cancer from the American Academy of Dermatology include:

• More than 3.5 million skin cancers in more than 2 million people are diagnosed in the United States annually.
• Current estimates are that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
• In 2015, it was estimated that 1 in 50 Americans will develop melanoma in their lifetime.
• Melanoma incidence rates have been increasing for at least 30 years.
• Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old.
• Melanoma is increasing faster in females 15-29 years old than males in the same age group.
• The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent.

Guest speaker Dr. Mark Hammonds, a dermatologist in practice at King Dermatology in Mountain Home, will present Skin Cancer Prevention and Melanoma Education, a free seminar on Thursday, May 26 at 11 a.m. at the Peitz Cancer Support House.
